Computers
Computers are machines to help you solve problems
you wouldn't have if you didn't have a computer.
Cars
And if cars evolved at the same rate as computers have, they'd cost a
quarter, run for a year on a half-gallon of gas, and explode once a day.
Voice recognition
I've always thought the idea of voice recognition was not necessarily
a good one. Who wants to hear an office full of people yelling at their
machines? More recently I noticed people yelling at their machines
anyway, so I figured, what difference would it make?

UNIX
First there was Unix... Now there's AIX, AU/X, BSD, BSDI, Dynix, EP/IX, FTX,
Hurricane, HP-UX, Irix, Linux, Mach, Minix, Open Desktop, OSF/1, OSx, PC/IX,
Plan 9, Polyx, Posix, QNX, Risc/OS, Risc/ix, SCO Unix, Sinix, Solaris,
Sprite, SunOS, SVRx, Topaz, Tunis, Ultrix, Unicos, V, v10, Xenix, ..."
C
... If it wasn't for C, we would be using BASI, PASAL and OBOL!
The OS
Like a government,
the operating system performs no useful function by itself.
it simply provides an environment within which
other programs can do useful work.

Lawyers
Idle lawyers tend to become politicians,
so there is a certain social value in keeping them busy.

URL's
Somewhere there is a person that automatically scans a number of
groups for URL's, makes some HTML pages and puts them on the Web.
I don't remember exactly where, but it was rather cool.

What's certain?
Three things used to be certain:
death, taxes, and the announcement of a newer, faster, and cheaper
computer two days after you buy one
